Defining Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a neurological disability caused by damage to the brain before, during, or after birth. It may be identified at birth or later, when developmental delays become apparent.

•Cerebral palsy is the most common motor disability in children.

•Cerebral palsy’s impact on development can range from mild to severe.

•About 3 in 1,000 children have cerebral palsy.

•Congenital CP is caused by brain damage before or during birth and accounts for the majority of cases of children with CP.

•Other risk factors for cerebral palsy include low birth weight, prematurity, infections that affect the brain during infancy, and brain injury due to accident or abuse.

•To be given a diagnosis of cerebral palsy, injury to the brain must occur before age sixteen.

•Forty-one percent of children with cerebral palsy also have some form of seizure disorder.

•Different types of therapies are used to minimize and control the effects of CP on a child’s day-to-day functions. They include speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy.

•There is no cure for cerebral palsy.
